What is Lucee CFML?

By  Jeff Pond

There's a bit of buzz around at the moment about a new CFML engine on the block, "Lucee".  So what is "Lucee"?  To quote the Lucee team directly, "Lucee is a light-weight dynamic scripting language for the JVM that enables the rapid development of simple to highly sophisticated web applications."  In simpler terms, Lucee is an open-source web scripting language that is compatible with Railo and Adobe ColdFusion.  The major difference with Lucee is that it has a far greater community focus, which should see the project driven in a more suitable direction than Railo or Adobe ColdFusion.

In some basic testing we have done so far Lucee looks and runs pretty awesomely.  To upgrade a server from Railo to Lucee it's as simple as exchanging a JAR file.  To migrate an application from Adobe ColdFusion might take a little work, but fundamentally, the bulk of the application should "just work".

If you are looking for a great alternative to Adobe ColdFusion, then Lucee is what you're looking for.  Check out Adam Cameron's blog for far more details.

We at AusTiger Hosting believe Lucee is going to be great, so much so, we have become corporate supporters of the Lucee project and we now offer Lucee hosting in both our shared hosting and dedicated VPS offerings.
